A style was born in the East and gradually gained momentum. That style, in today's era of scientific discovery and ever-deeper thought, enriches our world with Oriental spirit and beauty, with minimal but solid features. Oriental literature, calligraphy and painting, garments, food, sculpture, architecture and drama all leave their marks on contemporary society. In the face of both classics and new generations, Oriental style finds poise and balance in its thousands of years of tradition.
Oriental style is rooted in nature, life and society. We can capture enlightening traces of its rhythms and beats in the feelings, emotions and thoughts of daily life. The East was once remote and mysterious to outsiders. It drew the world’s eye only recently, when it emerged as a competitor to Western culture. In the 19th century, for example, impressionist painters began to incorporate the aesthetics of Eastern art, like the changes of light and shadow in daily life and the seasons, into their work. Now, the depth and resonance of the Oriental style dominate the global cultural narrative.
In this new era of creativity, style no longer belongs exclusively to its originator. Change comes not just in waves and from groups, but constantly, and from individuals. The rapid evolution of cities, commerce, technology, ideas and people requires us to be courageous and novel as we create. Contemporary Oriental style faces the challenge of inheriting, defining, analyzing and incorporating its own vast heritage. At the same time, there is no such thing as generalized style. Rather, it is interdisciplinary, collecting cultural samples from throughout the world. Our predecessors understood life in the context of a single flower or tree, but this age demands that we learn to meditate in a swirl of information overload.
Chengdu IFS (Chengdu International Finance Square) and T China: The New York Times Style Magazine jointly organized the third annual T China International Style Conference. The conference’s goal is to discuss the spread and development of Oriental style around the world, and to investigate how to make style a defining part of our lives rather than an adornment. This aligns with the pioneering spirit of T China, Chengdu IFS and the City of Chengdu. In nearly a decade, Chengdu has transformed from a traditional region into China’s "third city", a hub for international business, fashion and innovation. The glorious vision of the Orient has now been realized here as well, and the splendid civilization of Sichuan has embraced and adapted to a new era.

The people of the Orient have always had an instinct to uncover an idea’s secret heart. But now we must widen our gaze as we pursue the mission of the International Style Conference: to record the origins and evolution of style in China. This year, through the lens of Oriental Impressions, we will work with authorities in the fields of fashion, culture, art and business to better understand the rhythm of the universe. This investigation is like a mirror, reflecting both the joy and misfortune that define us. "Looking up to admire the vastness of the universe and looking down to appreciate the diversity of species. Let loose your mind and your sight, you will be contentedly entertained," said Wang Xizhi, a renowned calligrapher from the Eastern Jin Dynasty, who once searched for traces of beauty in the world and channeled them into his brush and ink. This forum will do the same, and will also revisit the original melody of the Orient. It will begin in the East and spread far and wide.
